The Anambra State Government has urged residents to regularly check their blood pressure and adopt healthier lifestyles to prevent hypertension-related deaths.

Speaking during activities marking the 2026 World Hypertension Day in Awka, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, described hypertension as a “silent killer” that often develops without symptoms until complications occur.

He said the state government, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), has introduced free hypertension screening services at primary healthcare centres and selected general hospitals across the state.

Obidike also unveiled the “Solution Know Your Number” campaign aimed at promoting awareness, routine blood pressure checks, and access to treatment.

He advised residents to reduce salt intake, eat healthy meals, exercise regularly, avoid smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, and seek prompt medical care when necessary.

The Commissioner commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for prioritizing healthcare and appreciated the support of WHO and other health partners in tackling hypertension and other non-communicable diseases.
