Howard Tucker, widely recognized as the world’s oldest practicing doctor, shared three simple principles he believed helped him live a long, healthy and fulfilling life before his passing at the age of 103.

The late neurologist, who practiced medicine for more than 75 years, was officially recognized by Guinness World Records as the “Oldest Doctor Ever.”

In a reflective essay published by CNBC “Make It” with the approval of his family, Tucker explained that longevity is not tied to one magical formula, but rather to consistent healthy habits and a positive outlook on life.

According to him, the first key to a long life is keeping the mind active. He compared the brain to a muscle that weakens when not used regularly.

Even in his 60s, Tucker pursued new challenges by attending law school at night while still working full-time as a physician. He later passed the Ohio Bar Examination at age 67.

He encouraged people to stay mentally engaged through work, volunteering, reading, learning new skills, playing music or participating in community activities.

Tucker also emphasized the importance of avoiding bitterness and hatred. He noted that anger and resentment can increase stress levels and negatively affect physical health over time.

Rather than dwelling on disappointments, he advised people to focus their energy on meaningful experiences and positive relationships.

The veteran doctor’s third principle was moderation. While he enjoyed good food and occasional drinks, he believed balance was essential for long-term wellbeing.

According to Tucker, living a healthy life does not require denying oneself every pleasure, but rather maintaining moderation in all aspects of life.

Before retiring in 2022, Tucker remained active in medicine, teaching and legal practice. He also featured in the documentary “What’s Next?”, which explored his extraordinary life and philosophy on aging gracefully.

His message continues to inspire people around the world on the importance of lifelong learning, positivity and balanced living.
