When Anambra State was created in 1991, it inherited no purpose-built seat of government. The official Government House was a temporary prefabricated structure originally meant for construction workers. For over three decades, successive administrations, from Mbadinuju to Ngige, Obi, and Obiano, did not fully resolve the situation.
Governor Chukwuma Soludo, upon assuming office in 2022, described it as a long-standing embarrassment and moved to change it. The result is the Light House Awka: a 23-hectare modern government campus with more than 50 structures. Before construction, the site was first reclaimed from severe gully erosion.
The complex includes the Government House, Executive Council Chambers, Deputy Governor’s Office, a 1,225-capacity banquet hall, amphitheatre, and the iconic Light of the Nation Tower, surrounded by extensive tree planting designed to support environmental balance.
President Bola Tinubu, who commissioned the project, described it as evidence that “Anambra is rising.”
The project sits within a wider record of over 900km of roads, bridges, hospitals, and over 8,000 teachers recruited without commercial borrowing.
Beyond architecture, the Light House sets a governance benchmark, symbolising delivery, continuity, and accountability.
