Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso have formally defected to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), urging party members to shun internal litigations and focus on national development ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The duo made the call during their official reception in Abuja, where they were welcomed by party leaders and supporters amid ongoing political realignments.
Obi, who recently resigned from the African Democratic Congress, said their decision was informed by the need for a peaceful and stable political platform free from internal crises.
He lamented the persistent disputes and court cases that have plagued opposition parties, accusing the current government of fueling divisions that distract from governance and nation-building.
Obi stressed that the NDC offers an opportunity to build a united, secure, and prosperous Nigeria without the burden of endless legal battles.
Kwankwaso said their engagement with the party leadership showed strong alignment in ideology and governance priorities, particularly in education, youth empowerment, security, and national unity.
He called on supporters across the country, including members of his political base, to register with the party and contribute to its growth.
Welcoming the new members, NDC National Leader Seriake Dickson described Obi and Kwankwaso as influential figures whose entry strengthens the party’s national appeal.
He reiterated the party’s commitment to transparency, inclusiveness, and grassroots participation, especially among youths and women.
The defection highlights growing efforts among opposition figures to form a stronger coalition capable of challenging the ruling party in 2027, as political alliances continue to shift across the country.
