Tension has gripped the Nri Kingdom in Anambra State following an alleged assassination attempt on a prominent aspirant for the Dunukofia, Njikoka, and Anaocha Federal Constituency.
The incident, which has sparked widespread concern among residents and stakeholders, is being viewed as a serious threat to political stability and public safety in the area.
According to reports, the attack occurred when the aspirant’s convoy was obstructed by an unidentified armed individual. The suspect was said to have brandished a firearm and opened fire on security personnel attached to the aspirant.
Security aides accompanying the aspirant reportedly responded swiftly, engaging the attacker and successfully disarming and subduing him before the situation escalated further.
The security unit of the Nri Progressive Union (NPU) has clarified that the suspect is not affiliated with its personnel.
Observers have described the incident as a targeted attack, raising concerns about the growing risk of politically motivated violence as the race for the federal constituency seat intensifies.
The matter has been referred to relevant security agencies for investigation.
Meanwhile, stakeholders and concerned citizens have called for a prompt, thorough, and transparent inquiry, urging authorities to ensure the safety of all political actors and to bring those responsible to justice.
