Head of Works Department and Town Engineer for Awka South Local Government Area, Anambra State, Engr Samuel Udefi has urged intensified awareness campaigns on climate change, adaptation, and migration, particularly at the grassroots.
Udefi made the call after receiving a special Environmental Safeguard Award from the Department of Geography and Meteorology, Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, during the 2026 World Meteorological Day themed “Observing Today, Protecting Tomorrow.”
Other awardees included Chief Sir Anthony Nnaemeka, Dr. Anselm C. Onuorah, Sir Ojukwu Obakasi, Barr. Stan Izoba Nwattah, and Dr. Bobmanuel Okonmah.
Highlighting environmental challenges in Anam communities, Udefi noted annual flooding and unpredictable weather disrupting farming. As President General of Igwebuike Anam Age Grade, he encouraged residents to use modern technology for weather prediction and adopt contemporary farming methods to mitigate climate impacts.
He also stressed environmental safeguards: “We must minimize pollution, avoid indiscriminate tree felling, and ensure proper urban planning to prevent severe consequences.”
Dr. Anselm Onuorah, former Chairman of Anambra East Council, supported the call, urging expert guidance for communities, especially riverine areas prone to flooding.
The event underscored the need for community collaboration, technology adoption, and environmental stewardship to tackle climate threats in Anambra State.
