Stakeholders in Anambra State have called for improved welfare, better working conditions, and stricter discipline in the civil service following an unscheduled visit by Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo to the Jerome Udoji State Secretariat Complex on March 26, 2026.

Speaking to journalists, Chairman of the Association of Retired Permanent Secretaries of Anambra State (ARPSAS), Nwabuonu Ogbaji, described the situation as a critical moment for reflection and reform within the state’s civil service.

Ogbaji commended efforts to enforce discipline but stressed the need for a more supportive work environment to boost productivity.

He noted that improved welfare packages, regular training, and proper motivation are essential to enhancing efficiency among civil servants. According to him, workers are more likely to remain committed when adequately supported.

He also urged civil servants to remain dedicated despite economic challenges, warning that absenteeism and lateness to work are unacceptable.

Similarly, Chairman of the International Peace and Civic Responsibility Centre (IPCRC), Chris Azor, said the challenges in the civil service extend beyond individual attitudes.

Azor identified systemic issues such as wage implementation concerns, rising cost of living, and the discontinuation of wage support measures as factors affecting workers’ morale.

He added that inconsistencies in salary structures and delays in resolving labour-related matters have contributed to dissatisfaction within the workforce.

The IPCRC chairman also pointed to administrative gaps resulting from recent government transitions, which he said have slowed decision-making processes across ministries, departments, and agencies.

He further emphasized the need to upgrade workplace infrastructure, including sanitation and office facilities, to improve productivity and staff welfare.
Both stakeholders agreed that meaningful reform in the civil service must strike a balance between enforcing discipline and addressing structural challenges affecting workers’ performance.
