COMMENTARY: Honouring Alphonsus Nweze: A Call For Journalists’ Housing Estate In Anambra State

Late Alphonsus Nweze

The news of the death of Mr Alphonsus Nweze, a veteran journalist and one of Anambra State’s most respected media professionals, has sent shockwaves through the journalism community.

His passing is not only painful but also deeply tragic. Late Nweze, who was based in Onitsha, reportedly died in a ghastly motor accident along the Onitsha–Asaba Expressway while returning to his residence in Asaba, Delta State. His death has robbed the profession of a brilliant mind, a fearless voice, and a man who epitomized the ideals of integrity and professionalism in journalism.

Alphonsus Nweze was more than just a journalist, he was a fine brain, a thorough researcher, and a man of enviable intellect.

Having reportedly defended his PhD thesis shortly before his untimely death, he was proof that journalism is not just a profession but an academic and intellectual pursuit.

His years of experience working with Champion Newspapers and other media establishments shaped him into a formidable voice in the media landscape. Those who knew him can attest that he was cheerful, approachable, meticulous, and firm in his convictions.

He never took “no” for an answer when it came to pursuing truth or justice. His arguments were sound, his writings insightful, and his presence in any media gathering always meaningful.

Beyond his personal achievements, the passing of Alphonsus Nweze exposes a pressing issue that has long plagued journalists in Anambra State and beyond, the lack of adequate welfare and housing support for media professionals.

Despite their role as the watchdogs of society, journalists often operate under harsh economic conditions, struggling with low pay, job insecurity, and lack of basic welfare provisions, including decent accommodation.

It is therefore imperative for the Anambra State Government to take a bold and compassionate step by establishing a Journalists’ Housing Estate, a low-cost housing scheme dedicated to practicing journalists in the State. Such an initiative would not only ease the accommodation challenges faced by many in the profession but also serve as a lasting legacy in memory of late Alphonsus Nweze.

Naming the estate after him would be a fitting tribute to a man who dedicated his life to informing, educating, and shaping public discourse.

Governor Charles Soludo’s administration, known for its people-oriented policies, has a golden opportunity to lead this noble cause.

Providing journalists with affordable and decent housing will not only motivate them but also reinforce the importance of their role in governance and development.

As the media community mourns this irreparable loss, we extend heartfelt condolences to his wife, children, and the entire Nweze family.

May God grant them the fortitude to bear this painful loss. Alphonsus Nweze may have departed this world, but his pen, passion, and principles will continue to inspire generations of journalists yet to come.

His life was a lesson in resilience, and his death a reminder of the need to care for those who dedicate their lives to informing the society.

May his soul rest in perfect peace.
