Preparations are on top gear for East of the Niger Interclub Tennis League Championship slated for February 8,9,10, 2024 at Nnewi Sports Club, Anambra State.
The Vice President of Nnewi Sports Club, Dr Chukwujekwu Emeka disclosed this at the club house weekend which he said would be the 25th edition of the competition since inception to mark the silver jubilee of the sporting events.
Dr Emeka who is also the Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee for the event said that the competition involved all the clubs East of the Niger and would be hosted by Nnewi Sports Club under the sponsorship of Cutix Plc.
“The last one was played in Owerri, another one in Aba and we normally rotate it among the participating clubs.
“We are still in the quarter finals to be played on January 27, 2024 and it is after that we will be able to know who will participate in the finals. We call it Super 4.
“But whether you are in the Super 4 or not the event is open for all clubs to come up to witness the sporting activities. It is a club affair, we are not professionals. It is an avenue we usually use to interact. Cutix Plc has been the sponsor of the events for almost 25 years now.
The immediate past Assistant Secretary of the Nnewi Club and a member of the LOC, Comrade Charles Nwoye also disclosed that there were between eight and ten clubs drawn from Enugu; Owerri; Orlu; Abakiliki; Onitsha, among other Sports Clubs participating in the upcoming events.
“The Super 4 will come here and slug it out on 8, 9, and 10 for the gold, silver and bronze cups and other prizes which I’m not in the position to mention.
“Our invitation is extended to the Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State and other Nigerians.
“We urge governement, private individuals, organizations and other Nigerians to invest in sports, “he said.
He disclosed that recently the Minister of Sports for States, Sunday Dare was attracted by the Senator representing Anambra South Senatorial Zone, Dr Ifeany Ubah who donated to the club some sports equipment.
He said Ubah had also demonstrated his love for sports with the equipment and donation of a gymnastic section of the club to enhance physical fitness.
He named other sporting activities at the Nnewi Club house to include Badminton; Snooker; Scrabbles, saying that other spots were on their way to be added.
