Iran fires on ships, re-closes Strait of Hormuz amid rising tensions

Strait of Hormuz

Tensions in the Middle East escalated as Iran reportedly fired on commercial vessels and re-closed the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil shipping routes.

The move came despite claims by U.S. President Donald Trump that a blockade of Iranian ports remains in force, and Iran’s earlier announcement that the strait had been reopened.

According to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations, a tanker was struck by a projectile about 25 nautical miles off Oman, damaging containers onboard.

The crew was reported safe. British authorities also said Iranian Revolutionary Guard gunboats opened fire on a vessel transiting the area.

Iran later warned that the strait would remain closed until the U.S. lifts its blockade, cautioning ships against approaching the channel.

The renewed disruption threatens global oil supply, as the waterway handles a significant portion of the world’s crude exports. Analysts say the situation could further destabilize energy markets already under pressure.

Diplomatic efforts continue, with Pakistan reportedly mediating between Washington and Tehran, though prospects for immediate talks remain uncertain.
