Don to redefine Nigeria’s SME development at UNIZIK 127th inaugural lecture

A Professor of Management at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Professor Chinedu Onyeizugbe, is set to unveil a research-driven framework aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s entrepreneurial ecosystem through an improved model of the Igbo Apprenticeship Scheme.


The framework will be presented during the university’s 127th Inaugural Lecture scheduled for Thursday, July 9, 2026.


Titled, “Navigating the Labyrinth of SME Development in Nigeria: Unveiling an Improved Model of the Igbo Apprenticeship Scheme as a Mitigant,” the lecture will examine how the indigenous apprenticeship system can be enhanced to boost small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs), reduce business failures and promote sustainable economic growth.


A former Director of the UNIZIK Business School, Onyeizugbe has authored over 80 scholarly publications and carried out extensive research on entrepreneurship and the Igbo Apprenticeship System.

He also heads the UNIZIK Centre for Capital Market Studies, where he has championed initiatives connecting SMEs with investment opportunities.


He has attracted and managed several major research and development grants, including projects funded by the World Bank, the Royal Academy of Engineering (UK), Agence Française de Développement (AFD), and other partners.

He also chaired the Anambra State “One Youth Two Skills” Entrepreneurship Scheme.


The inaugural lecture is expected to attract academics, entrepreneurs, policymakers, students, business leaders and development partners interested in enterprise development and economic growth.
