Anambra Police crack down on sexual predators, 12 arraigned over rape, defilement, child abuse

The Anambra State Police Command has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to protecting women and children from abuse, following the arraignment of twelve suspects over alleged offences ranging from rape and defilement to child abuse, abduction and assault.


The suspects were arraigned before the Gender Magistrate Court sitting in Awka on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, in separate cases involving minors and other vulnerable victims.


According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, three of the suspects, Chima Onyeanuna, Emeka Muo and Okafor Chibundu, were arraigned over the alleged abduction and defilement of a 14-year-old girl in Nanka.


In another case, Chukwudi Ugwu Jeremiah was brought before the court for the alleged defilement of an 11-year-old girl along Slaughter Lane, Awka.


Also facing prosecution are Ndubuisi Ikechebelu, Udogu Kennedy, Nnamah Christopher and Chinecherem Emmanuel, who were arraigned over allegations of raping a 19-year-old woman on different occasions, allegedly resulting in her pregnancy.


The court also heard the case involving Charity Anakwe and Chidiere Anakwe, who were arraigned over the alleged assault of their 12-year-old house help.


Similarly, Chukwudi Joseph was arraigned for allegedly assaulting a 12-year-old girl in Ozubulu, while Chibuike Agu is facing charges over the alleged defilement of a 13-year-old girl in Fegge.


Following their arraignment, the court ordered that all twelve suspects be remanded at the Awka Correctional Centre pending the hearing of their respective cases.


Reaffirming the Command’s stance, Ikenga said the Police maintain zero tolerance for sexual and gender-based violence, child abuse and all forms of violence against vulnerable persons.


He assured residents that the Command would continue to thoroughly investigate such cases and ensure that offenders are prosecuted in accordance with the law, while urging members of the public to promptly report incidents of abuse to the nearest police station.
