Disaster looms in Onitsha as Trans Nkisi landlords beg Soludo to halt rampaging gully erosion

Landlords in Trans Nkisi G.R.A. Layout, Onitsha, have made a passionate appeal to Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, to urgently fast-track government intervention to tackle the devastating gully erosion threatening lives, homes, and critical infrastructure within the estate.

The Chairman of the Trans Nkisi G.R.A. Landlords Association, Chief Onyebuchi Ndulue, made the appeal following the recent joint inspection of flood- and erosion-prone communities in Onitsha by the Commissioners for Works and Infrastructure, Physical Planning and Urban Development, and Environment.

The state officials visited the affected areas to assess the extent of the damage and identify immediate measures to contain the worsening environmental disaster.

Landlords Commend Government’s Response

Speaking at one of the major erosion sites in Trans Nkisi Layout, Chief Ndulue described the expanding gully as a serious environmental emergency requiring urgent and lasting government intervention.

He commended the Soludo administration for responding swiftly to the community’s concerns, noting that the inspection had renewed residents’ confidence that permanent erosion control measures would soon be implemented.

Residents Pledge Full Cooperation

Chief Ndulue assured Governor Soludo that landlords and residents would continue to partner with relevant government agencies by protecting drainage channels, complying with approved physical planning regulations, and supporting every initiative aimed at restoring and preserving the environment.

He disclosed that the community has already established an organized waste management system while encouraging residents to maintain proper sanitation, preserve vegetation, and adopt environmentally friendly practices capable of reducing erosion and flooding.

Call for Immediate Permanent Solution

According to the landlords’ chairman, tackling the environmental challenge requires collective responsibility between government and residents.

He reaffirmed the unwavering support of Trans Nkisi Layout landlords for Governor Soludo’s environmental restoration agenda and appealed for the immediate commencement of permanent erosion control works to avert further destruction and safeguard the community.
