The Mayor of Nnewi North Local Government Area, Hon. Echezona Anazodo, has announced a series of sweeping environmental sanitation, security and urban renewal measures aimed at tackling flooding, improving public safety and transforming the commercial city.

Speaking during a media appearance on Choice FM, Anazodo disclosed that the Anambra State Government has declared a state of emergency on environmental sanitation to be observed on Saturday, July 4, 2026, from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

He said the council would, from the same day, commence massive desilting of drainages across communities and markets in Nnewi North to ensure free flow of water and reduce the risk of flooding.

According to him, the local government has already mobilized personnel to evacuate refuse and silt removed from the drainages immediately after the exercise, while market leaders have been directed to ensure full compliance with the sanitation order.

The mayor acknowledged that flooding is a global natural disaster but stressed that residents have a responsibility to minimize its impact by keeping drainages free from waste.

On security, Anazodo announced that the council would soon begin profiling commercial motorcycle operators through the introduction of Security Identity Number jackets for all okada riders in the local government, following security reports received by the authorities.

He also revealed that the state government had commenced the second phase of demolition around the Nnewi Roundabout as part of ongoing urban renewal efforts to give the town a modern outlook.

Appealing to residents to support the initiatives, the mayor warned against indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drainages, stressing that the government would no longer tolerate practices that degrade the environment and contribute to flooding.

He added that the council was actively working to tackle erosion sites across Nnewi North, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to building a progressive and prosperous local government for present and future generations.
