By Chukwuka Ugokwe

A cross-section of participants at a one-day event organised by the Anambra State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has reaffirmed that collective action against drug abuse remains essential to building a safer and more prosperous society.

The event, held at the Federal Secretariat, Awka, to commemorate the 2026 World Drug Day, had as its theme: “The World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses.”

Soludo Reaffirms Support for NDLEA
Governor Chukwuma Soludo assured the Anambra State Command of the NDLEA of his administration’s continued partnership in combating drug trafficking and substance abuse.

Represented by the Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Mr. Patrick Agha-Mba, the governor stressed the significance of this year’s theme, lamenting that drug abuse has continued to destroy the future of many young people, undermine national development, and fuel criminal activities.

He expressed concern over the growing prevalence of substance abuse in society and highlighted various youth empowerment initiatives introduced by his administration to discourage young people from engaging in drug abuse and trafficking.

NDLEA Calls for Collective Action

The Anambra State Commander of the NDLEA, Commander Charles Onubogu, called for stronger collaboration among government agencies, communities, families, and other stakeholders in the fight against drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

According to him, the agency cannot win the battle alone.

“The most effective drug rehabilitation is a strong, loving, and observant family unit.

“Let us leave here today not just having celebrated a day, but having made a personal commitment. Together, we can ensure that our communities remain safe, productive, and free from the scourge of drug abuse and trafficking,” he said.

Expert Advocates AI in Drug Fight

Delivering the keynote lecture, the Anambra State Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Clems Aguiyi, urged young people to stay away from hard drugs and remain focused on achieving their life goals.

He also encouraged the NDLEA to equip its personnel with training in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies to enhance efforts in combating drug abuse and tracking drug traffickers.

Security Agencies Pledge Support

Representatives of the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Department of State Services (DSS), National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the fight against drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

Students Shine in Quiz Competition

The event also featured a quiz competition sponsored by the Traditional Ruler of Ogidi, Igwe Alexander Onyido.

St. Patrick’s College, Awka, emerged overall winner and received a cheque, laptops, and cash prizes.

Christ the King College, Onitsha, came second, winning a cheque, laptops, and cash prizes, while Stella Maris College, Umueri, finished third and went home with a cheque, cash prizes, and 32-inch plasma televisions.
