At least 49 travellers die of thirst after truck breaks down in Niger desert
At least 49 people have died of thirst after a truck carrying travellers broke down in a remote area of the Sahara Desert in northern Niger, authorities have said.
Journey Ends in Tragedy
The victims were reportedly returning from Mali to celebrate the Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha with their families in Niger when their vehicle became stranded more than 80 kilometres west of Assamaka, a border town near Algeria.
According to regional authorities, efforts by the driver and passengers to repair the truck were unsuccessful, leaving the group without access to water in the harsh desert environment.
Two Survivors Raise Alarm
Officials said two people survived after walking more than 50 kilometres to find water before reaching Assamaka, where they alerted authorities.
Rescue teams later recovered the bodies of the victims around the disabled vehicle.
Dangerous Desert Route
The Sahara region in northern Niger is a major transit corridor for migrants and travellers moving across West and North Africa.
The area is known for its extreme temperatures and limited access to water, making journeys particularly hazardous.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the exact cause of the truck’s breakdown or how long the passengers remained stranded before help arrived.
