Courageous Judges keep hope alive in Nigeria-Ejiofor

Human rights lawyer and lead counsel to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Ifeanyi Ejiofor, has praised what he described as courageous judicial decisions that reaffirm public confidence in Nigeria’s justice system.

In a statement titled “Wednesday Musings: When Justice Refuses to Bow-Two Landmark Judgments, Eight Years of Waiting, and a Resounding Triumph of the Rule of Law,” Ejiofor said recent court victories demonstrate that the judiciary remains the last hope of ordinary citizens.
Enugu Court Upholds Traditional Ruler’s Election

Ejiofor recounted how his law firm took over a prolonged legal dispute involving High Chief Christian Okwudili Akpata, who was selected as Igwe-Elect of Akama-Oghe in Ezeagu Local Government Area.

According to him, after nearly eight years of litigation, the High Court in Enugu presided over by Justice E. M. Egumgbe upheld Akpata’s selection and election as the lawful DimEze IV of Akama-Oghe.

He described the judgment as a victory for the rule of law and a reminder that justice, though sometimes delayed, can still prevail.

Anambra Court Nullifies Certificate Revocation

Ejiofor also highlighted a separate judgment delivered by Justice C. C. Okaa at the Onitsha Judicial Division of the High Court of Anambra State.

The court nullified the revocation of a Certificate of Occupancy belonging to Rotech Group, an estate development company, and awarded damages against the state government for what was ruled an unlawful exercise of executive power.

Call for Respect for Rule of Law

The lawyer said the two judgments delivered on the same day underscore the importance of judicial independence in sustaining democracy.

He urged courts across the country to remain committed to justice and constitutional principles, saying that judges must continue to uphold the law without fear or favour.

Ejiofor also called on Peter Ndubuisi Mbah to facilitate the implementation of the Enugu judgment and complete the formal recognition process for High Chief Akpata.

Judiciary Must Remain a Beacon of Hope

Reflecting on the decisions, Ejiofor said Nigeria still has judicial officers who understand that justice is a constitutional obligation rather than a privilege granted by those in power.

He commended the judges for their courage and dedication, expressing hope that their example would inspire other judicial officers across the country.
