Renowned human rights lawyer and lead counsel to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Ifeanyi Ejiofor, has petitioned Nigerian security agencies to investigate alleged inflammatory comments made by Akin Fapohunda.
Ejiofor warned that authorities have 72 hours to commence investigations or face a direct criminal complaint in line with Nigerian law.
In a statement issued on Monday, Ejiofor described the alleged remarks as ethnically provocative and capable of creating fear, political tension, and public unrest ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He stressed that no citizen should be intimidated or threatened for exercising democratic rights, warning that unchecked hate speech and ethnic incitement could endanger national unity and peaceful coexistence.
Drawing parallels with historical conflicts such as the Rwandan genocide, Ejiofor cautioned that dangerous rhetoric often fuels violence when left unchallenged.
The lawyer also urged security agencies to remain neutral and act decisively against statements capable of inciting ethnic hostility, regardless of the status or political affiliation of those involved.
He maintained that Nigeria’s democracy can only thrive through justice, mutual respect, and peaceful political engagement rather than fear or ethnic intimidation.
