The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has launched a special enforcement operation, codenamed “Operation Guduma,” to tackle the use of fake diplomatic number plates and overloading on roads in Anambra State.

Speaking during the inauguration in Awka on Monday, the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, represented by Assistant Corps Marshal Oko Etuali, said the operation became necessary due to rising cases of fake ambassadorial and diplomatic number plates.

According to him, the illegal use of such plates poses a security risk amid prevailing insecurity in the country.

He explained that while the FRSC designs and produces number plates, state governments are responsible for issuing them to government officials.

Mohammed noted that many former officials fail to return official number plates after leaving office, despite the plates having expiry dates for easy identification.
He said the operation, already ongoing in some states, would run in Anambra and Enugu from May 18 to May 22.

The FRSC boss also warned against overloading, saying the agency had begun sensitising drivers and transport operators on its dangers before full enforcement begins.

He added that offenders caught overloading vehicles would face sanctions aimed at improving road safety.
