No fewer than 3,000 residents of Awka and surrounding communities are benefiting from the ongoing fifth edition of the International Medical Mission organized by Awka Union USA/Canada.
The free medical outreach, which began on May 11 and ends May 15, 2026, is taking place across several locations in Awka, including Umuzocha, Umudioka, Umuokpu and Amikwo quarters.
Speaking during the exercise, the President-General of Awka Union USA/Canada, Dr. Anthony Nwobum, said the initiative was aimed at promoting unity and improving healthcare access for Awka indigenes and residents. He noted that the mission was fully funded by members of the union in the United States and Canada.
President of the union, Onyebuchi Mbonu, said the diaspora group decided to give back to the community through free healthcare services, lamenting the poor state of healthcare delivery in Nigeria.
Chairperson of the medical mission, Dr. Gloria Adigwe, explained that beneficiaries received treatment for ailments such as diabetes, high blood pressure, malaria, arthritis and stroke, alongside eye care services and free eyeglasses.
Lead doctor of the outreach, Dr. Titi Uyanwune, disclosed that over 60 medical personnel, including doctors, pharmacists, nurses, optometrists and support staff, participated in the exercise.
Community stakeholders and beneficiaries commended the initiative, describing it as impactful and lifesaving, while calling for sustained support for healthcare delivery in the area.
