Mr Peter Obi
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the southern part of the country, agreeing on a single four-year term arrangement that is widely seen as paving the way for former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, to contest under the party’s platform.
The decision was reached during the party’s National Convention in Abuja, where delegates endorsed a motion to rotate power between the North and South. Under the arrangement, the South will hold the presidency for one term if it wins in 2027, after which it will return to the North in 2031.
Party leaders said the zoning formula was designed to promote fairness, unity, and balance within the opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The development is expected to strengthen Obi’s position within the party, especially after he and former Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, recently aligned with the NDC, calling for a stronger opposition platform to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Obi, speaking at the convention, praised the party for supporting multi-party democracy and expressed confidence that the 2027 elections would be credible and transparent. He also highlighted national challenges such as poverty, unemployment, and insecurity, urging Nigerians to rally for change.
He further called on supporters to mobilise ahead of the elections, stressing the need to “build a new Nigeria” and reject bad governance.
With the zoning agreement in place, political observers say the NDC has significantly reshaped the early dynamics of the 2027 presidential race, positioning Obi as a major contender within the emerging opposition structure.
