COMMENTARY: Indecent Dressing: A Growing Threat To Our Moral Values

BY David Onwuchekwa

As Christmas approaches, the streets once again become a parade of questionable fashion choices.

Young ladies wearing outfits that leave little to the imagination, hoping to attract attention, and young men dressing in ways that mimic fugitives or wayward sons.

This worsening trend in dressing has become a troubling reflection of societal decay, and it is far removed from the values that define the Igbo cultural identity.

The increasing acceptance of indecent dressing, especially among young women, is alarming. What began as a misguided attempt to be “modern” or “fashionable” has grown into a norm where walking half-naked is seen as acceptable.

Disturbingly, some women manage to dress decently for church or religious gatherings, only to return home and switch back to outfits that undermine modesty and self-respect.

What many do not realize is that men generally accord greater respect to women who present themselves with dignity.

Dressing decently is not old-fashioned, it preserves the honour of womanhood and upholds societal values.

While some men may cheer or pretend to admire indecent dressing, many of them ultimately seek responsible and modest women when choosing lifelong partners.

Sadly, this disconnect has contributed to rising cases of delayed marriages or perpetual singleness among women who may unknowingly send the wrong signals through their attire.

Young men are not exempt from this trend. The fashion craze of wearing torn jeans, fixing earrings, or plaiting hair in ways that mimic street gangs raises serious concerns. These styles do not reflect confidence or modernity; they project irresponsibility and, at times, criminal undertones.

This is a call for introspection. Fashion should never come at the expense of dignity, cultural values, or societal peace. Both young men and women must understand that how one dresses speaks volumes long before words are uttered.

To safeguard morality and restore societal pride, we must collectively reject indecency and embrace dressing that commands respect, not condemnation.
