The Anambra State Police Command has recorded another major breakthrough in its ongoing intelligence-led operations against kidnapping, armed robbery and other violent crimes in the state, killing two suspected members of a criminal gang during a gun duel.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, August 19, 2026, along Eziowelle Road, where operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, reportedly engaged a group of suspected armed robbers and kidnappers.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the operatives received credible intelligence that the suspects were operating along the road and immediately mobilised to the area.
Ikenga said that upon sighting the police team, the hoodlums opened fire, forcing the operatives to engage them in a gun battle.
He disclosed that two of the suspects sustained fatal gunshot injuries during the encounter, while other members of the gang escaped with varying degrees of gunshot wounds.
The police recovered one AK-47 rifle with a magazine containing four live rounds of ammunition, one pump-action gun and five live cartridges from the scene.
Ikenga said the command, under the leadership of CP Nnanna Oji Ama, remained committed to sustaining proactive and intelligence-led operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks and protecting residents across the state.
He added that the command had commenced further investigations and intensified efforts to track down the fleeing members of the gang.
The Police Public Relations Officer assured that further developments would be communicated as investigations continue.
