Anambra unveils ambitious statewide master plan to end urban chaos, boost development

By Chukwuka Ugokwe

The Anambra State Government has announced plans to develop a comprehensive statewide master plan aimed at driving sustainable development, improving urban renewal, and ensuring orderly physical growth across the state.

The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Chijioke Ojukwu, disclosed this during a courtesy visit by the Nigeria Institute of Town Planners on Tuesday.

Ojukwu said the government would partner with professional town planners to produce the master plan, which will divide the state into sectoral development zones, including agricultural, industrial, residential and commercial areas.

Master Plan to Guide Future Development

The commissioner stressed that stronger collaboration with professional planners is essential to the success of Governor Charles Soludo’s urban renewal agenda, especially as communities continue to expand rapidly.

He noted that the ministry is also focused on strict enforcement of physical planning laws to prevent unregulated developments that could threaten public health and the environment.

Commissioner Raises Concern Over Planning Violations

Ojukwu cited a proposed piggery project in Ebenebe, Awka North Local Government Area, where a technical report allegedly failed to provide for a soak-away system to manage waste.

According to him, such lapses highlight the need for greater professionalism and closer cooperation between the ministry and town planners to ensure compliance with approved planning standards.

Town Planners Pledge Support

Earlier, the Chairman of the Nigeria Institute of Town Planners, Ifeanyi Igwilo, congratulated Ojukwu on his appointment as the pioneer commissioner of the ministry and pledged the institute’s full support.

Igwilo said the review and renewal of development plans are necessary to keep pace with modern realities and ensure that infrastructure projects align with approved planning frameworks.

He added that the institute looks forward to working with the government to develop plans that will guide future growth and restore deteriorating urban areas across Anambra.
