A Nigerian scholar, Nnabuike Chisom, has captured global attention after delivering his master’s graduation speech entirely in Mandarin at Zhongnan University of Economics and Law, China.
Chisom, who represented the international student community during the university’s 2026 graduation ceremony in Wuhan, addressed an audience of nearly 4,000 students and academics in flawless Mandarin, a language he revealed he knew nothing about a decade ago.
His remarkable performance quickly went viral across social media platforms, with many viewers expressing amazement at his fluency, pronunciation, and confidence.
Some commenters jokingly compared his command of the language to that of a native speaker, while others hailed him as a shining example of Nigerian excellence on the global stage.
Reflecting on the achievement, Chisom described the opportunity as a great honour, expressing gratitude to the university for entrusting him with the responsibility of speaking on behalf of international students.
“Representing international students to give a graduation speech at the graduation ceremony has been an absolute honour. I am so grateful for this trust and opportunity to share our journey,” he said.
Despite the milestone, the Nigerian scholar said his academic journey is far from over.
He disclosed that he is proceeding to a PhD programme, noting that he still has many skills to develop and goals to achieve.
The inspiring feat has been widely celebrated as a testament to determination, hard work, and the limitless possibilities available to young Nigerians willing to pursue excellence beyond borders.
