Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has expressed concern over the underfunding of insurance research in Nigeria, warning that it could hinder the sector’s contribution to national development, financial inclusion and risk management.
The position was contained in a communiqué issued by the Programme Coordinator, Prof. Ikeotuonye Victor Okonkwo, at the end of the Department of Insurance’s inaugural Insurance Week 2026.
The university noted that emerging risks such as climate change, cyber threats, health emergencies and technological disruptions require innovative insurance solutions backed by sustained research. It also stressed the need to attract and develop young professionals with strong technological, analytical and ethical skills.
The conference urged the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) to strengthen policies that promote insurance inclusion, consumer protection, innovation and collaboration with tertiary institutions to bridge the gap between research and industry practice.
Participants also called on universities to deepen partnerships with insurance firms and regulators, while encouraging students to acquire digital and professional skills to improve their career prospects.
The conference, themed “Insurance for All: Driving Inclusion, Innovation, and Trust,” brought together regulators, insurance professionals, academics, students and policymakers to discuss the future of insurance education and practice in Nigeria.
