Residents of Umuoba Anam in Anambra East Local Government Area have appealed for urgent government intervention over a deteriorating two-storey building at Community Secondary School, Umuoba Anam.
The call followed an inspection by the Education Committee of the Umuoba Anam Town Union, led by President-General, Hon. Uchenna Anizor, and Youth Forum President, Comrade Onyebuchi Mmeh, who warned that the cracked structure could collapse, especially during the next flood season.
Anizor appealed to Governor Chukwuma Soludo, the Commissioner for Education, and other elected representatives to support the rehabilitation of the school to avert a possible tragedy.
Mmeh described the rescue of the school as a collective responsibility, urging community members, alumni, corporate organisations and non-governmental organisations to contribute towards renovating classrooms and improving learning facilities.
A teacher, Mr. Jude Onuorah, also highlighted the lack of science laboratories, computer facilities and teachers’ accommodation, noting that the school lost its computers during the 2012 flood and now struggles with computer-based examinations.
The Principal, Mrs. Esther Emma-Nwakaeze, commended the Town Union for drawing attention to the school’s condition and appealed to government and other stakeholders for urgent intervention.
