Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command attached to Oyi Divisional Headquarters have foiled an alleged attempt by a 21-year-old woman to sell her newborn baby in Igbariam, Oyi Local Government Area of the state.

The intervention followed credible intelligence received on June 19, 2026, which prompted officers to swiftly move to the location where the young mother and her infant daughter were found.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the woman had allegedly concealed her pregnancy and delivery from her parents. She was said to have left her family home in Imo State and taken refuge with a friend in Igbariam before the alleged plan was uncovered.

Police immediately secured both mother and child and contacted the woman’s parents, who responded promptly.

The family was subsequently reunited with the young mother and her baby to ensure proper care, protection and emotional support while investigations continue.

Commending the vigilance of the concerned citizen whose report led to the intervention, the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu, praised members of the public for their cooperation with law enforcement agencies.

He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to protecting children from abuse, exploitation, trafficking and neglect, urging residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities in their communities.

The Police said investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure that anyone found culpable is brought to justice.
