Human rights lawyer and lead counsel to IPOB, Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor, has questioned the circumstances surrounding the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar in captivity, describing it as a troubling reflection of Nigeria’s security challenges.
In a statement titled “Weekend Musings: The Dangerous Hypocrisy of Negotiating with Terror,” Ejiofor criticized what he called the contradiction of negotiating with bandits while many innocent citizens remain detained under controversial security classifications.
He expressed disbelief over reports attributing the late General’s death to “natural causes,” insisting that a transparent and independent investigation was necessary.
“A retired Major General was abducted, held in captivity under traumatic conditions, and then dies. Describing such a death as ‘natural causes’ raises serious questions that deserve answers,” he said.
Ejiofor also lamented the growing influence of armed groups in parts of Northern Nigeria, alleging that some communities are forced to pay levies and protection fees to survive.
According to him, the situation reflects a dangerous erosion of state authority and the normalization of insecurity.
The lawyer further decried what he described as unequal treatment within Nigeria’s security architecture, arguing that while innocent citizens are often detained on suspicion, terrorist groups continue to expand their operations and challenge state authority.
He urged government at all levels to recommit to defeating terrorism and preventing criminal groups from becoming parallel authorities.
Ejiofor also called on communities to remain vigilant and support lawful security efforts, warning that indifference to security threats could have grave consequences.
