Anambra State Government has clarified that its ongoing crackdown on fake pastors and criminal native doctors is aimed at combating crime, not attacking religion or tradition.
Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation, Dr. Law Mefor, stated this during a visit to the Special Adviser to the Governor on Community Security, Hon. Ken Emeakayi, in Awka.
According to Mefor, the operation is backed by the Anambra State Homeland Security Law 2025, which targets individuals using religion or traditional practices as cover for criminal activities.
“The church will not shield anyone involved in criminality in the name of religion.
The law applies to both fake pastors and criminal native doctors,” he said.
He commended Emeakayi and his team for their efforts in improving security across the state despite prevailing challenges and pledged greater media support to enhance public awareness of security operations.
Mefor also called on traditional rulers and town unions to play more active roles in community security, suggesting that relevant sections of the Homeland Security Law be simplified for easier understanding.
Responding, Emeakayi thanked the commissioner for the visit and support, explaining that his office assists law enforcement agencies by receiving complaints, making arrests, conducting preliminary investigations, and handing over suspects for prosecution.
