Former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has opened up on why he developed admiration for veteran entertainer Charles Oputa despite initially disapproving of his unconventional appearance and lifestyle.

Speaking during an interview on the Before Tomorrow Comes Podcast, Obasanjo said he first found Charlie Boy’s mode of dressing strange and inconsistent with the dignified image of his late father, Justice Chukwudifu Oputa.

According to Obasanjo, his perception changed after witnessing firsthand how devoted Charlie Boy was in caring for his father during his old age.

“I saw how well Charlie Boy took care of his father. No matter how immaculately dressed another person may be, they could not have cared for Justice Oputa better than Charlie Boy did,” Obasanjo said.

The former military leader explained that he later understood Charlie Boy’s eccentric fashion sense and dramatic public personality as part of his entertainment brand and comedic identity rather than a reflection of poor character.

Obasanjo further disclosed that his admiration for the entertainer grew stronger after observing how he cared for his mother and managed family responsibilities.

He described Charlie Boy’s life story as inspiring, noting that there are important lessons parents can learn from the relationship between the entertainer and his father, especially in allowing children pursue legitimate career paths different from parental expectations.

Obasanjo also praised Charlie Boy’s memoir, 999, describing it as a well-written masterpiece filled with lessons about resilience, family values, tolerance, and philanthropy.

The elder statesman used the opportunity to preach tolerance and national unity, warning Nigerians against judging entire ethnic groups based on the actions of a few individuals.
