The Secretary, Faith Based Mobilisation (Christians), APC Presidential Campaign Council, Princess Gloria Akobundu, has congratulated Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingoes, on their historic victory at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

The Flamingoes defeated Japan 2-1 in the final held in Rabat, Morocco, on Saturday to become the first African nation to lift the prestigious trophy.

Goals from Awawu Bashiru and Golden Ball winner Oluebube Umejiaku secured the landmark triumph, completing Nigeria’s unique double as the first African country to win the FIFA U-17 World Cup in both the men’s and women’s categories.

Princess Akobundu described the achievement as a defining moment for Nigerian women and the entire nation.

“I am filled with pride and joy as I celebrate our world champions, the Flamingoes,” she said.

“These young girls have not only lifted the trophy; they have lifted the hopes and spirits of millions of Nigerian girls and women. Their courage, resilience and excellence have written a new chapter in African football history.”

She particularly hailed the team’s remarkable turnaround after an opening defeat to Poland, noting that their subsequent six consecutive victories, including wins over defending champions Korea DPR and Brazil, demonstrated true Nigerian fighting spirit.

Princess Akobundu linked the success to the growing opportunities for young women under the current administration and the importance of sustained investment in sports and girl-child development.

“This victory belongs to every Nigerian girl who dares to dream,” she stated.

“It is proof that when our daughters are given the platform, support and encouragement they deserve, they can conquer the world. I congratulate Coach Akeem Busari, the technical crew, the Nigeria Football Federation, the National Sports Commission, the players and their families.”

She called on governments at all levels, corporate organisations and stakeholders to intensify support for women’s sports and grassroots talent development so that more young Nigerian girls can rise to similar heights.

Princess Akobundu prayed for the continued success of the Flamingoes and expressed confidence that the team’s triumph would inspire a new generation of champions across the country.
