A two-storey residential building has collapsed at Inyaba-Umudim, Nnewi, in Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State, with no casualty recorded as of Sunday, August 30.
The Anambra State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development confirmed the incident, saying Commissioner Bar Chijioke Ojukwu visited the scene to assess the situation.
Ojukwu said preliminary findings showed that the collapsed building was poorly constructed and erected without the required approval from the ministry.
He added that the structure was built against the wall fence of an existing three-storey building within the same compound.
According to him, occupants of the three-storey building would be evacuated while the structure would undergo a mandatory integrity test. He said it would be demolished if found unsafe.
The commissioner also announced plans for symbolic demolition of similar structures built without approval or in violation of required setback rules.
Ojukwu reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to enforcing building standards and protecting lives and property across Anambra State.
