Anambra State Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation, Dr. Law Mefor, has called on the Real Estate Developers Association of Nigeria (REDAN) to partner with the state government in tackling criminality, rent exploitation and environmental abuse in the housing sector.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by REDAN members led by the state chairman, Dr. Sunny Nwachukwu, in Awka, Mefor condemned excessive agent commissions, arbitrary rent increases and fraudulent land transactions, describing the sale of one plot of land to multiple buyers as a prosecutable financial crime.
He disclosed that the government is considering legislation to regulate estate agents’ commissions and curb unreasonable rent hikes, while also vowing to end illegal development levies imposed by youth groups in some communities.
The commissioner reiterated Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s preference for private sector-led high-rise housing projects, noting that Anambra’s limited landmass and growing population make vertical development necessary.
Mefor promised to facilitate a meeting between REDAN and Governor Soludo and urged the association to submit its proposals formally.
Earlier, REDAN Chairman, Dr. Sunny Nwachukwu, appealed for greater government recognition, saying mandatory REDAN membership for developers would help eliminate illegal operators and promote professionalism.
The association also sought collaboration with the Ministry of Information and ABS to increase public awareness.
