Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, has pulled out of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi’s exit reportedly followed sharp disagreements with the coalition’s leadership, particularly on the zoning of the presidential ticket and the inclusion of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
He was said to have insisted that the ADC should zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the South, arguing that since the current president is from the South, equity demands that power should remain in the region.
The former Anambra State Governor was also reportedly uncomfortable with Atiku’s presence in the coalition, fearing the former Vice President had a stronger chance of clinching the ticket and was unwilling to step aside.
In addition, the Obidient Movement, which forms Obi’s major support base, accused the ADC leadership of breaching agreements and faulted its decision-making process.
Following his withdrawal, Obi is said to be exploring options with the Action Alliance (AA), where he may emerge as the party’s presidential flag bearer for the 2027 polls.
Meanwhile, the ADC has cautioned Obi against leaving the coalition, warning that the move could jeopardize his political future by eroding trust among allies and alienating key stakeholders.
