Drainage system used as toilet
It is quite a pity that open defecation which seems to have been eradicated at Upper Iweka, Onitsha, Anambra State has suddenly returned in fullness.
The sudden return of indiscriminate defecation at Upper Iweka, however, prompted road users to abandon a particular route due to offensive smell caused by human feases.
Traders who are operating businesses near by gutters are facing serious health hazards as a result of the unhealthy environment.
It was gathered that the absence of Operation Clean Healthy Anambra (OCHA Brigade) at Upper Iweka for some weeks has turned the area into a defecation field causing all the environments stinking as it used to be before the advent of OCHA brigade.
Meanwhile, when newsmen visited Upper Iweka, no single man of OCHA Brigade was sighted as top of gutters as well as main roads were littered with human feases and urine especially Upper Iweka to Niger Bridge express way.
It is obvious that some people are deliberately out to deface the environment in order to undermine the effort of the State Government who have determined to make a living conducive to the people of the State.
A reliable source revealed that men of OCHA Brigade were asked to hold on their duty before the local government election in the State so that people of the State could freely go out to cast their votes, adding that after the election they were yet to resume duty.
The source further disclosed that immediately OCHA Brigade went on break, activities of open defecation and indiscriminate urinating began with full force, saying that disorderliness has again returned to Upper Iweka like before.
” There are lots of mad people in Upper Iweka, but since OCHA Brigade was commissioned to oversee sanitation, many of them have ran into shelves until now they feel that OCHA Brigade are not on duty.
“They have started again. Without force, Upper Iweka cannot be controlled especially open defecation because many people don’t have toilet facilities in their homes. Some don’t even have a place to sleep except at Upper Iweka. These are the people who cause havoc both day and night, “the source said.
Efforts to contact Managing Director (MD) of Operation Clean Healthy Anambra (OCHA Brigade), Mr Celestine Anere proved abortive as his phone number was switched off.
