Irefi Oraifite celebrates Ufiejioku festival to promote cultural heritage

The traditional ruler of Irefi, Obi Sunday Enekwuizu (Obiukwu II), along with the Irefi Obi in Council, Nzuko Irefi and the entire Irefi community in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State conclude their Ufiejioku festival.

The event in Irefi Oraifite was the second celebration of Ufiejioku festival in the community which took place on September 14, 2024, at the Irefi Civic Center.

The event was attended by friends and well-wishers from various parts of Anambra State and beyond.

Ven Kenechukwu Obi officially declared the event open with a sermon and prayer.

Many notable personalities including the Transition Committee Chairman of Ekwusigo Council Area, Hon. Chimezie Obi; Hon. Ikenna Ofordeme (Owele); Engr. Abela Emuebue (Double Lion of the Black Race); Dr Alusinwelemili na Oraifite; Nwakaibeya na Oraifite; and Obele Chukwu, among others were there.

During the segment of Iwaji ritual, Obi Irefi emphasized the significance of yam as the king of all crops.

He expressed his gratitude to God for a bountiful harvest and for preserving their lives until this year’s celebration.

In an interview, Obiukwu II thanked God for the festival, appreciated his people for their support, and encouraged the youth to be diligent and committed to the betterment of Irefi and society at large.

Prince Chinedu Nsoffor (Ichie Nzedike Oraifite), Chairman of the Irefi Obi in Council, described the festival as a significant annual event during harvest time, dedicated to giving thanks God for a bountiful harvest and the gift of life.

He commended the efforts of the community members in advancing the development of Irefi and prayed for continued unity and progress.

Other attendees, including Double Lion of the Black Race, Nwakibeya, and Alusinwelemili, expressed their joy over the celebration and prayed for steady peace and progress in the community.

The highlights included cutting of roasted yam by Obiukwu II, homage to the traditional ruler, cultural dances, and displays of various masquerades.
