The Chairman of United Butchers Association, Bridge Head, Onitsha in Onitsha South local government Area of Anambra State, Chief Emmanuel Chukwu has named insecurity in the North as the reason for the high cost of cow meat in some parts of the country particularly in South Eastern markets.
The Chairman made the disclosure while addressing newsmen in his office. According to him, the insecurity in some parts of the Northern States is the major cause of high cost of cow meat.
He noted that people could not travel to Northern States freely to buy the live stock for fear of being kidnapped or killed by bandits coupled with bad roads.
His words: “To go to Northern States to buy cow now is like someone embarking on a suicide mission. We have lost many of our members on such journeys, and if you are lucky to get there, the truck drivers would charge you exorbitantly due to the same insecurity and bad roads.
“So after risking your life in those bad roads you find out why it is very costly mostly in South Eastern States, “he said.
Chief Chukwu appealed to the federal government as matter of urgency to checkmate the activities of the killer-herdsmen, Boko Haram and bandits so as to reduce the sufferings and killings of the citizens.
“Federal government should do everything possible to save the lives of innocent citizens being kidnapped, killed on a daily basis, “he appealed.
The market leader also appealed to the Governor of Anambra State, Prof Charles Soludo to come to their rescue as, according to him, their slaughter house is nothing to write home about. He said its floor has been damaged and needed urgent repairs as well as other parts of the market.
The market leader assured their continued support to the government of Prof Soludo just as he congratulated him on his 21/21 victory In the just concluded Anambra State governorship election.
