Anambra State government has indicated its readiness to tackle the erosion menace at the frontage of Ogbaru main market, near Lagos Park, Onitsha.
President General of the market, Chief Ndubisi Ochiogu disclosed this to newsmen in an interview at the weekend. He said that work would start at the site any time this September, 2024.
He told the traders that he had been intimated by the appropriate quarters that technical assessment had been concluded and that the project would commence as soon as possible.
It will be recalled that the erosion menace has been a source of concern to the traders of the market and it has been there for about six years unattended to. It is also gathered that traders at the market have lost not less than N1billion to the menace as goods are always destroyed at the market every rainy season. Some of the shops located in the area have submerged due to flood disaster caused by the erosion.
Newsmen gathered from the traders that the PG had from time to time tried to personally check the erosion but could not do enough because of the volume of the problem.
While thanking Governor Soludo for his decision to tackle the erosion to ameliorate the sufferings of the traders as well as Chief Somto Udeze, Speaker, Anambra State House of Assembly for helping to ensure the project is realized, the PG appealed to the traders in the affected area to cooperate with workers who would be deployed to work on the project just as he urged them to be prepared to support Governor Soludo for a second tenure in office.
Speaking on the general condition in the market, he said that the market enjoyed peace and tranquility as his administration had introduced adequate security network, provided necessary developmental initiatives like provision of functional boreholes to provide steady water supply, construction of key roads to improve accessibility inside the market, provided fire extinguishers to various lines and stores. He disclosed that his administration had also set up a viable conflict resolution mechanism to promote love among the traders, among other things.
