Former All Progressives Congress (APC) Chieftain, Chief Dr George Moghalu has explained why he has chosen the Labour Party as a political platform to actualize his political aspirations and desire.
Chief Moghalu gave the explanation Saturday in Nnewi, Anambra State during a press briefing at his residence.
He further explained that the individual and platform to be used are very critical in every political contestation, adding that there is no doubt that he is a politician and would remain so, since he has not decided to quit politics.
The former APC National Auditor and immediate past Managing Director of National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) said it was in the light of that basic fact that he took his decision.
He explained that the decision was for him to make as a person and it was him that would decide what to do with his life and his ambition.
“The best thing I can do in that circumstance is to involve my immediate family, my wife and my children. But the second one which is very critical is the platform, and for you to consider the platform a lot of issues have to be considered, a lot of consultations have to be made.
“You should remember that by the time I resigned from the APC, I said I’m open to consultations across the country, talking with my friends, my colleagues and my political associates.
“And I came back to Anambra State and talked to my supporters and talked with a lot of people, summoned my campaign council to a meeting, asking them now that I have resigned from APC what do we do next?
“After all those consultations, it becomes obvious to me that for me to realize the ambition I have, for me to have a platform to serve the people in line with my aspirations and desire, that the viable platform for me to use is Labour Party. That was why on the 1st of October I declared for LP.
“So, it`s not about any party failing or not it`s my decision and my team with a view to furthering any desire and my aspiration.
“Facts must be sacrosanct. If there is anything I have strived to do in life, it is to maintain my credibility, sincerely and honestly even in the face of daunting challenges, I try to live that life so that at the end of the day even after politics that my children will look at me and say they are happy, my friends like you will say you are happy.
“So, that has always informed my decision. In 1998 I participated in forming APP, as far back as 1991 when National Republican Convention (NRC) was formed because it was decreed into existence by the military and we congregated in NRC. Those friends of mine will tell you that we remained together and moved to APP so, consistency has always been my mantra and I follow it up.
“As to whether somebody made me a promise, I will be very happy, if anybody made me that promise. As we speak, nobody has made me that promise because I know even as at today every other person has also indicated interest in using LP as platform. But by the time we further the campaign and consultations, the members of the party, owners of the party from my own understanding of party politics will now be in the position to say who or who they can use to contest any election because it takes too many things to win an election.
“You should consider the acceptability, credibility, capacity and ability of the individual. So, there are quite lots of considerations and the party members will take these issues into consideration, is he a known face, is he acceptable to the people, can he win the confidence of Anambrarians and things like. So, all these issues will come into discourse before a final decision is taken.
“But as to whether somebody made me a promise, no. But from the reactions and responses we get, they go to say that my coming with this platform will help the party.
“I’m qualified to be a Councilor; I’m qualified to be a local government Chairman, I’m qualified to go to the National Assembly, I’m qualified to be the President of Nigeria today by every stretch of imagination.
” So, people are free to speculate which also goes to show that I’m an issue for discussion but I’m running for Anambra governorship.
“A lot of things are wrong in Anambra leadership and you also know that a lot of things are wrong. However, one thing I don’t do is that I don’t criticize without providing alternatives. I’m going to issue a statement on my declaration because I have not declared formally.
“That declaration will come with a formal statement and I will take all the issues of governance, what I expect, what I promise to do, how I’m going to address all the issues. But the truth about it today is that our people are not happy. You as journalists can investigate that.
“There is total infrastructural collapse, there is insecurity at the highest level. So, there is quite a lot that need to be re-engineered. And the biggest loss for any administration is to lose the confidence of the people.
“My major agenda is to restore the confidence of Ndi Anambra in their government as I have earlier promised. The moment you win the confidence of your people, governance becomes a lot easier.
“You can relate with the people you govern, you can disagree with them, they will tell you where to go, because you are talking about them. If it’s not about them some of us will not be in the system.
“I have said it time and time again that what you can’t do in four years, you cannot do it in eight years. I have firmly promised to do one single tenure. I’m going for governorship of Anambra State realizing in all honesty, God be my witness, that there is a sustaining zoning formula that was adopted for stability, credibility, balance, equity fairplay and justice and I will go for one term. Let it be placed on record.
“I have been on the ballot once and that was in 2003 because in 2021 they fooled us and I reacted.
“Power belongs to God and all we do is to make ourselves available for God to choose. There is no supermarket where power is being sold, where you can go and pay and collect. So, you must make yourself available because all power belongs to God and he decides who to give it at His appointed time.
“I decided that this is the appointed time. After wide consultations, I have made myself available, allowing the will of God to prevail. This is the appointed time. Like I have always said, it is not cast in iron that I must be Governor. What of if you don’t have life. It is God and the same God who did it yesterday can still do it again because He never changes.
As He was yesterday so He is today and so shall He remain forever. And if God is God His will must be done.
If it is God’s will that I will be Governor, to Him be the glory, if it is God’s will that I won’t be Governor, to Him also be the glory.
“Given the fact that the likes of Val Ozigbo, John Nwosu among others are vying under the same Labour Party is no problem at all. It’s a welcome development. This is the answer to your question on how I can contain that.
” Val is my good friend. You didn’t even mention Barth who is also my friend. John Nwosu is not only a friend, he is my brother. Every one of us is qualified but most importantly only one person will fly the flag of the party.
“We talk, we consult and if it’s the will of the people, it becomes me, if it’s God’s will, to God be the glory.
“I have never gone into any political contest with a fixated mind that it must be me, otherwise it will not work. That is my attitude. My attitude is the attitude of friendship. But I strongly believe that with us in the LP and kind of mindset I have and the kind of mindset I believe they also have we must all come together to build a strong force.
“We are fighting an incumbent, so you cannot go for such a fight with a divided house. We must all come together to work as a family because LP should be and is expected to be one family. The recently conducted local government election is a sham.
“I won’t waste my time commenting on it. If that is the way elections are conducted, sorry for democracy. Every politics is local. We are going to play it here and we are going to play it here locally, “he submitted.
