Anambra community raises alarm over anti-cult police actions, files petitions to police high command

Residents of the Golden Estate Landlord Association in Oba, Idemmili South Local Government Area, have petitioned the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Zone 13, Ukpo, Anambra State, and the Chairman of the Police Service Commission over what they called nefarious activities of the Anti-Cult police unit in Obosi, Anambra State.

The letters, dated October 25 and October 29, 2024, were written on their behalf by their solicitors, the Law Firm of I.C. Ejiofor & Co., and duly signed by the Chief Counsel and principal partner of the firm, Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor, Esq.

The Association is seeking the immediate intervention of the police high command to address what they described as the excesses of the Anti-Cult Unit, which they said had been accused of tormenting residents by allegedly storming into their homes at ungodly hours to make arrests, and extort money.

They alleged that the Anti-Cult Unit forcibly entered homes at night, whisked off their targets, and drove them to a nearby location to extort them before releasing them shortly after the arrest.

Residents alleged that the Anti-Cult Unit had turned their peaceful community into an ATM cash-and-carry point, where they periodically visited to whisk off people and extort them, according to the petition.

The petitions await further action from the police igh Command, leaving residents to sleep with one eye open.
