The self rediscovery efforts of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State will be taken up one more notch this weekend as the members gather in Awka to choose new leadership for the party.
Political watchers have predicted a clean sweep by a set of brand new untainted hands, a clear departure from yesterday’s pattern where discredited top.brass stakeholders handpick and foist their surrogate on the party.
So two main bloc appear to have clearly emerged. While no one appeared keen on naming members or actual power bases of the blocs, our ear-to-the-ground investigation named young breed, Barristers Amechi Onowu and Ikechukwu Adilieje as leading the favorite group.
Onowu, described as a quiet smooth operator is contesting for the State chairmanship position which was reportedly zoned to Anambra Central zone.
Adilieje, who is said to be a very discreet mobilizer, organizer, and unifier is said to be leading and reaching out to the key critical stakeholders of the party to birth a set of new faces, hands and minds to return the once powerful PDP to winning ways.
So far, they have all been working vehemently behind the scenes to carry the day and to ensure that those associated with the lethargic past did not return or be allowed to keep the party on its knees as witnessed all these years.
When spoken to on the phone last night Adilieje admitted he’s interested to see Onowu, himself and other equally progressive minds step in “to rekindle the ever present fire in bones and soul of the PDP members in the state.”
According to him, everything is set to return the party to top reckoning in the state as the ruling party.
He urged the members, especially the delegates to this weekend’s State Congress to start the journey to next year’s governorship success with those they elect to take charge of the helm of affairs of the party for the next four years now.
Surprisingly, it appears no one really want to say much about the second bloc as an official met at the Udoka Housing Estate office of the party described them as “being sponsored by those who rendered the party unsevicable and decrepit”, whatever that means.
The official who refused to give out his identity disclosed also that no reasonable member of the party want to associate with those who collected so from the party, cleared the funds, carted away vehicles, furniture and left huge arrears of unpaid rent, salaries and other statutory bills.
According to him, officers to be elected are those in love with the State, the party and her members’ progress.
