Yet to be known gunmen on Monday burnt Umunze Police Station in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State and killed two policemen.
The suspects reportedly launched the attack at the police facility with improvised explosives, shooting indiscriminately during the operation which set fire to part of the station.
During the attack, two police officers on duty were reportedly killed in the gun battle as they attempted to resist the assailants to prevent further damage.
Confirming the attack, Anambra State Police Command spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga disclosed that the bodies of the deceased policemen had been recovered and taken to the morgue. He also said that joint security forces, including the police, army, navy, civil defense, and other agencies, had recovered five unexploded improvised explosives and were pursuing the attackers.
Ikenga further noted that the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, visited the scene for a spot assessment to reinforce and reassess security deployment. He has called on anyone with information that could assist in the investigation to come forward, assuring that any such information will be handled with utmost confidentiality.
