Anambra bus drivers demand union election, reject outsiders

Bus drivers in Anambra State have called on the government to conduct elections that will allow practicing drivers and vehicle owners to lead their unions.

The demand was made during a meeting between leaders of the Anambra Bus Drivers Forum (ABDF) and the Commissioner for Transport, Mr. Edward Ibuzor, in Awka.

ABDF Convener, Comrade Osita Obi, said transport unions should be led by genuine drivers rather than “professional unionists” who are not actively involved in the profession.

He argued that elected leadership would improve drivers’ welfare, discipline, security collaboration, and revenue generation.

Responding, Ibuzor assured the drivers that the government would prioritize their welfare and would not support any arrangement that sidelines genuine transport operators.

The drivers also appealed for government intervention over alleged harassment by traffic enforcement officials, police units, and touts operating on roads across the state.
