The Federal Government has said it would build 1 million houses for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and vulnerable citizens at the cost of N3 million each.
Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation Betta Edu, stated this when she inspected a prototype of the one and two-bed rooms houses, yesterday at Idu industrial Area, Abuja.
Edu explained that government would commit 30% of funds, while the communities and development partners would provide 70%.
According to her, the initiative would create jobs for the locals and shore up their daily earnings.
She said: “So, for 1 million households is the target. 1 million household will simply translate to an average of 5 million Nigerians receiving shelter across the country.
“Now, we are not building them here at do and the reason is because we do not have millions of IDPs here.
“There are areas in Nigeria where we have billions of IDPs like in Benue where we have already done the groundbreaking and the work has already started in progress.
“In fact, the team just came in this morning from Benue just because they had to be present at the viewing of the sample.
“We going to build in Adamawa and areas where we have internally displaced persons and they will benefit and then where we have communities that we have people who are extremely poor, and part of their requirements will be shelter, who would equally build for them.”
The Minister assured the IDPs and international partners that the house would be of standard because the people would be involved directly.
